Use of Flickr in AT Course

Week3: #7: Use of Flickr in AT Course

One possible use of Flickr is to post a series of photos on different airplanes with unique design features and invite the students to post comments on the photos based on their web research. The emphasis of the exercise will vary depending on the topic.

In the module on Mechanics of Flight, the exercise could include the endurance and range, take-off and landing distances of each of the airplanes and how they are affected by the design features.

Yes, this is a good exercise to get the students to relate the features of an aircraft and their influence on the performance of the aircraft.

I shall have to put in the meat of this exercise for the next academic year when the modules are allotted to the lecturers.

Week 3: Task # 7: New Technology

New Technology of Interest.

The wonders of search engine such as Google and Yahoo have always amazed me. In opening my new account with Yahoo in order to open an account in Flickr, one of the options included my agreement to allow Yahoo to make use of the details of the websites visited for their research.

I happened to read an article this week on the early warning signs of the next pandemic flu; it was suggested that Google would be able to give an early indication of the pandemic outbreak by tracking the number of searches on relevant key words such as 'flu', 'cold', 'influenza' and other words related to flu. People suffering from symptoms of flu or those who suspect that they may be coming in with flu will google 'flu' to get information on the web. The number of searches will provide an early indication that a possible outbreak is on the way, and the various locations of the cases. The production of flu vaccine will get a head start and such vaccine can be sent to the outbreak spots for immediate use.
It is not fool-proof of course, and it could end up as just another normal outbreak of the common cold during the winter months. Further, in order to produce the correct vaccine, we need to identify the particular flu strain (H5N1 or other less virulent strains?). But with the next flu pandemic, time is crucial in containing the outbreak, and it is always better to err on the safe side.
So, of course I agreed to allow Yahoo to use the information on the websites that I do visit; my little contribution to save mankind.

Week 3: Photos & Images: #5,6,7

Hi Guys,

This is week 3. I have just opened a Yahoo account and the Flickr account. It looks like we have to open a few email accounts by the end of this course. Opening a Yahoo account and a Flickr account is much easier than I thought; very user-friendly indeed. My Flickr account is:
flickr/com/ykb17.

I have also uploaded a picture of the Aerospace Hub although I must admit that it was taken in Sep 07 on our day of departure to the flight camp in Senai.

I shall try to take a picture in the library with the kind permission of the library staff of course.

I have also uploaded a picture of my Pomeranian dog in Flickr.

As I was going through this exercise, I was thinking about the possible use of Flickr with my students. Yes, it would be a challenge to invite students to log on to yet another website and do some assignments. We shall try it out.

CL2: Week 1 and Week 2

Hi Guys,

The assignment for the first week was not a problem, reading up the habits of a life-long learner. Yes, I agree with the concepts of being a learner and would like to cultivate the habits too as I enjoy learning and reading.
I do not have any problem with the 71/2 habits as they are only logical if one wishes to a life-long learner. Learning can be fun if one has the right attitude. Now how do we convince our students about these habits??

Having completed the things to do for week 1 ( reading about CL2 and 71/2 Habits), I decided to go ahead and try out the more exciting activities like setting up a blog and an avatar.

Here are my 2 dogs, Jamie (front) and Tiger (back). Jamie was given to us by the local vet, while Tiger came from the gardener in the golf course, hence the name Tiger. We have a third dog, a pomeranian, imported from Australia. I must find a picture of him and paste it in the blog the next time. More about the dogs the next time.
